Meteoblue constantly presents new developments

26.11.2020

The meteoblue weather service based in Basel has developed a weather map widget that can be embedded in any website. This widget is the latest development from the innovative company.

With the new weather map widget from meteoblue, weather forecasts can be integrated in a website free of charge. This innovation boasts wind animations with streamlines and colors to indicate the movement of entire air masses, “unique features”, as the company explained in a press release.

Users of the free widget can tailor this to their requirements and thereby customize it, choosing from a variety of flexible functions. Alongside online media, companies operating in the area of aviation, shipping and logistics can take advantage when optimizing route plans.

Weather forecasts from meteoblue were initially developed at the University of Basel. In 2006, meteoblue was founded as an independent company with headquarters in Basel. This new widget is the latest development in a range of innovative services. The collaboration between meteoblue and Microsoft has also garnered particular attention, as was reported in an article by SRF. Microsoft is using meteoblue weather data in the latest release of its flight simulator – in real time. For these forecasts, the Basel company combines various meteorological models and then uses artificial intelligence to decide which forecast is the most accurate. “Even if one model contradicts all the others, it could still be the right one – because it was always true under the same conditions in the past,” explains Mathias D. Müller, founder and president of meteoblue.

The People Indoor Bias map visualizes people’s tendency to remain indoors or go outdoors. It therefore “provides an additional estimate of future COVID-19 infection risk at larger scale”. With the City Climate Map, unique precision and resolution can be offered on temperature and precipitation for cities like Basel, where data is collected on these meteorological variables at 100 different locations in the city.

What’s more, meteoblue is also active in research and development. In October, CEO Karl G. Gutbrod presented  a study on the development of weather services at the first virtual conference of the European Meteorological Society.
